I will share what one of my AA students shared with me after one of the school shootings back in the 90's.

Her: Mr H, you don't have to worry about that happening here.

Me: Why is that?

Her: Black people don't have the patience for that stuff. If we are going to shoot someone we go get a gun and shoot them now. Wer'e not going to wait around a week planning it.

I am sure you will label me a racist for saying this but she hit on the main problem in most AA schools. Those schools, and the neighborhoods where they are found, have a serious problem with a lack of impulse control. Why do AA communities have such low graduation rates? Impulse control. Education is about delayed gratification. There are no rewards for doing your homework each day. The carrot comes at the end when you get your credit and eventually when those credits add up to get your diploma. If one does not have the ability to delay gratification then they will never complete their education. Crime is about immediate gratification, when you successfully commit a crime you are rewarded on the spot. Any community that lacks the ability to delay gratification will have very high crime rates and very low graduation rates.
