The dust blocks solar radiation from being absorbed by land.
Think of the 'cause' of the last ice age. Some hypothesize that the most recent dinosaur extinction event was caused by an asteroid. The dust and debris thrown into the atmosphere blocked solar radiation from being absorbed by the land, and global temps plummeted. The same is true of the dust and ash thrown into the atmosphere by volcanic eruptions.
