Leveling Germany & Japan almost instantly changed those populations. They went from being the world's most militaristic people to being among the world's most pacifistic people. Seventy years on this remains true.
We didn't do it by sharing a Coke with them. We did it by relentless bombing, including the use of two nuclear devices.
Was it horrific? Yes.
Were many innocents killed? Absolutely.
Was it necessary? Damn right.
Did it change things? Definitely.
It not only changed things, it changed their very nature. It should also be noted that the defeat of Germany and Japan liberated their citizens as well...
Thankfully the world has move beyond such extreme levels of warfare (I hope), but you can't say violence NEVER makes things better. In many cases this is true - it actually makes things worse - but not always.
All war is evil, but at times it can be a necessary evil.
