I'm not saying it will work in Syria or that it even applies, but military action can be used to send strategic messages with the hope/belief it might preclude larger scale violence & bloodshed.

It doesn't always work out that way, but pacifism doesn't always work either. There's a continuum between the two philosophies.

Wise people realize this, accept it, and work within it...
