where in-flight refueling didn't occur and you couldn't wage war from the other side of the globe, I think those bases were more important. Still important for some weaponry, I suppose. Isn't that why we maintain a base in Turkey, even though they seem to have no particular love for us?

It's not hard to see why a US controlled peninsula would be concerning to both China and Russia.
