This question was asked y'day but did not get much traction.
Do we have friends worth fighting for, worth dying for?
Can we sit idly by and do nothing if china and/or Nkorea attack japan or south korea? Just be spectators and maybe make a few speeches...?
When iran attacks israel, spectators with speeches?
I don't know the answer.
I agree that america should act in america's interest, not south korea's. Do we have interests in a peaceful korean penninsula? If china continues to build military capable air bases in the international waters of the south china sea, spectators and speeches?
I know, the UfN will take care of it.
I am not advocating for intervention. I don't know....
Or this, what if there clearly are no american interests in sub saharan africa for example or in south america. One third world country attacks another. Uses chemicals, slaughters innocents and enslaves the populace. We could stop the carnage with military action requiring ground troops.
Speeches and spectators...the UfN? Remember the genocide in rwanda. Wild bill clinton regrets not acting.
Thoughts...?
