but working oneself to the bone much of one's life doesn't seem an ideal model either.

If you compare our economic model to ecosytems - the best and richest and most vibrant ecosystems such as a rain forest never sees one part of it taking a mamority of the of available resources. Nowhere in nature does such a model succeed. And yet, that is the very model the US has worked out. It cannot survive.
