Without knowing your age, I'm guessing you, like me, had years of using maps and directions in a Pre-GPS age. Adolescents today have always lived in a GPS, connected age.
Not saying they shouldn't be able to count out change, but skill use is tied to frequency of use and not "they should've learned this once in school 10 years ago."
Application of knowledge and skills is how they retain and master it over time.
