contracts?
I was once a union member in my early teaching days, not because I was forced but because of the protections I was told they offer. I found out very quickly the union did not care about me or my being the best teacher I could. They were interested in the status quo and union dues.
When a number of us were attempting to set up a tutoring program after school hours for kids in need and were told by the union rep that we could not do it without getting paid, which the school would not, all of us resigned from the union the next day. We had to continue to fight the union in order to volunteer our own time to help students after hours. The union stance was that we were organizing a group effort and it set a bad precedence. If we were willing to work extra without pay other people would be expected to as well.
Unions are there to help workers not make their jobs harder. If they are valuable to the workers then they will join of their own free will. There is no reason to coerce membership.
