love to read and study on your own. That was either directly taught to you or modeled by your parents.
Politically we are not allowed to say it but the problem with education is not the schools, or at least not wholly, it is the communities in which the schools are located.
Is it just coincidence that there are NO failing schools in middle class neighborhoods? There are a handful of successful schools in failing neighborhoods but they are never simple neighborhood schools.
Schools mirror the communities in which they are found. If you wish to fix the schools you must also fix the communities. Otherwise you are just chasing fool's gold.
