There is a lot of work to be done in the day to day planning and execution of a basketball team. Watching film, meeting with players, running practice, etc., not to mention other administrative tasks. These jobs keep the staff busy, and to take away one person who is in charge of it all is putting a lot on the other staff members. Not fair to deal them that hand for a few months when it won't make much of a difference.
As fans, we don't think about this, but I'm sure it's one reason - out of respect for the other coaches on staff.
