• Know his X's & O's.
• Be able to teach those X's & O's.
• Be able to recruit talented players.
• Be able to relate to players and handle problems.
• Be able to motivate players and assistants.
• Be able to find and retain good assistants.
• Be able to make in-game adjustments (the so-called "chess match").
• Be able to work the officials to get favorable calls.
... and must be able to do those things better than the other D-1 coaches he's competing against.
Kim really isn't good at any of those things, especially in terms of what it takes to succeed at the D-1 level.
