In a bi-state area like KC, a CCW permit is still your best option because of reciprocity. Illinois has almost no reciprocity and it's a pain in the ass to get the training for their permit. But all the other states which border Missouri have reciprocal agreements in place to recognize each others permits.
Somewhere I saw a nice chart of carrying with a permit versus carrying without in MO. If I find it again, I'll post it.
What is interesting in KS is hospitals, which have always been gun-free zones, will have a rule change July 1 at places like KU Med because it's a state institution just like the university and conceal carry will be allowed.
