what he brings to the table and I'm completely open to the idea that he could be anywhere from a non-factor to a difference maker.

Given Bello's physical skill set, my assumption was that Drew's zone defensive schemes would be a poor utilization of his length and athleticism defensively and he might be able to be more effective in a different system. Turns out, as you said he wasn't particularly skilled nor really all that committed to working very hard and he was basically a marginal player. Probably worth the risk, just didn't pan out.
