The difference - MU sold out to defend the paint, making Arizona hit shots to win. Arizona hit those shots. It was the right defensive strategy based on Arizona's past performances this season. Arizona got it done.
Hughes and VanLeer had balls go halfway down in the second half, and Woods/Puryear/VanLeer all missed gimmes at the hoop. 2nd half free throw shooting was atrocious. Bottom line: we could have made it a very close game.
Mitchell Smith logged some good minutes. VanLeer played excellent in the first half. Puryear, Phillips and Hughes hustled. Geist had his moments, but had to learn the hard way that he can't finish drives against good teams. Both Geist and Walton need to learn how to pass the basketball. Woods played hard, but he has limitations that just aren't going to improve. He botched 3 or 4 great entry passes.
I believe things continue to look up for this team. Nikko and Barnett are going to give the offense new options. Phillips, VanLeer and Hughes will be a capable rotation of guards. Smith and Jackson demonstrated that they can contribute, and I think Geist, Woods and Walton will be decent backups.
A team striving for .500 lost to a ranked team. Don't listen to the haters. We're getting better.
