Would a pellet gun or Airsoft gun be a cheaper way to start

I had an uncle that said he started his daughter off with a .22 so she would learn not to flinch when shooting.
We learned with BB guns, but were pretty stupid about it. We used to have BB gun wars in the woods and at a spot where our new house was being built. It does give an incentive to be quick and accurate, but it was indeed stupid.
One friend shot another in the eye, but luckily he had glasses on. It spider webbed the glasses & put a hole through them, but slowed it down enough it didn't put his eye out. Luckily the home was almost done so they could go inside & look in the mirror in a bathroom to pull glass shards out from behind his eyelids. He had recently had surgery on that eye to fix "lazy eye" too.
He busted out the rest of the glass on that lens so his parents wouldn't know what happened and we finished the war, fwiw.
