Christmas.
In a small men's store (the store was small, not the men) i asked the manager why he wished happy holidays to a previous customer. He said it was out of habit and he wanted to be inclusive. Words to that effect.
I asked if he thought a jew would be offended by being wished a merry christmas. He pointed to the owner standing next to us and said i should ask him.
The owner said he would have no problem with it and asked why i asked. I said it just seems "gutless" to be wary of offending anyone by wishing them happiness. I said if a jew wished me a happy chanukah i would not feel offended in the least.
A few days later i was in a store talking with a salesman whose name tag said, HAMID. He had a thick middle east accent. I asked where he was from, he grinned and said, "Christiansburg" which is a town next to blacksburg. I said come on, you know what i mean. He said he was from Iran. I asked if he would be offended if someone wished him a merry christmas. He said why should i be offended by someone wishing peace and happiness for me?
He thanked me for my purchase and i wished him a merry christmas.
Not very sensitive. Not very PC. But i think, honest.
