but I'm actually optimistic about this team. I feel for the first time in the past few years, we have a group of players that you can see a future in and a little chemistry as you watch them play.
Schedule wise, I think the goal simply has to be .500, and I see that happening. Right now we're at 2-2 and I think we get to a minimum of 8-4 by the end of non-conference play, and that's only if we lose to Illinois. Obviously a key will be not only if we win those games, but how we win them. I do think in the fan perception area, the Illinois game will be critical.
Let's be optimistic and say they get that game, and they're sitting at 9-3. To get to .500 at that point, you're talking going 6-12 in SEC play or 7-11 if we drop Illinois.
To break through .500 and have a shot at the NIT, I think we need to get to 17-13 with a win vs. Illinois. That would take going 9-3 and 8-10, which is quite respectable. Not easy to do, but could I see 6-3 (losses to Kentucky and two others) and 2-7 on the road as kind of a ceiling for this team.
Frankly, if they got to that point and avoided playing on the first day of the SEC Tournament, which would require a 10th or higher, that would be a great season given where we've been. 15-15 to 16-14 would be a solid improvement worth celebrating, even if it didn't up in a postseason birth (I have no idea what Kim's opinion is of the non-NIT postseason options). 14-16, with a win in SEC tournament, I think he's staying. 13-17 and under, unless the losses we have in SEC play are excruciatingly close to the point we can say we're competitive, I think he's gone.
My prediction? 16-14. I think we get Illinois and then proceed to go 7-11 in conference, going 6-3 at home but only managing 1 on the road. That puts us at 10th, and we win a game and lose a game in the SEC, ending up at 17-15. We don't get the NIT, but we have more wins than losses and that's a step forward.
