The north had a lot of manufacturing and wanted high tariffs to keep English products out of their market. The south wanted low tariffs because they were exporting a lot of cotton to Europe and they would retaliate if we raised tariffs.
The north prevailed and raised tariffs and it was a major hardship on the south and caused a lot of anger and resentment.
Their fears over what Lincoln would do regarding slavery obviously was a big factor in their calculations and they decided to secede from the union.
