Perhaps some can be manipulated by the media, but not everyone. In fact given the credibility rating for the MSM, I would argue that most do not believe what the media says.
So, it is not what you read that matters, but what you believe.
For example, dudes dressed like women should pee in the men's room. Don't care what the NYTs says.
