There are people and businesses that are in the business of dividing people. People on both sides have a vested interest in one side losing and will do everything to help that side lose. They don't care about the truth...they care about winning and the power.
In my opinion what led to this is mass government expansion. 600 people now control nearly all of our economy. Influence those 600 people or get your person elected, and you can have a big payday.
If you take power away from the government, interest in influencing the government goes away as well.
