Automation has replaced a lot of those jobs, even here in the US, and companies went to automation because it is much more efficient and cheaper and to STAY COMPETITIVE with overseas competition that is also using automated manufacturing systems.
This has nothing to do with tariffs or trade. This is just market conditions. I don't see how this can be fixed easily.
Even in cases where heavy manufacturing factories still employ workers, the numbers are way down because they also use automation. So it's not an all or nothing proposition to have automation but it still decreases the number of workers needed.
