Here is a better analogy. Your daughter was assaulted at a party and the police are called. She is able to point out the guy and he has pictures and video on his cell phone of the assault. But it turns out that he just happens to be the mayors nephew and the DA owing him a favor refuses to prosecute. What should the cops do? Simply let it drop seems to be your answer.
