The mainstream media, for instance, has been purchased by a handful of media conglomerates.

Folks with money and friends in power can have a major influence over union leadership and political parties.

They can often add enough power to sway who is going to win the primaries... and general elections.

In those cases the strength of the checks and balances can be compromised.
