You are correct, Wooden coached at what is today, Indiana State University. Bo Ryan went from Division III to Wisconsin-Milwaukee D-I for 2 seasons, then Wisconsin.
There are other examples. The argument that you and many others make that a coach is either qualified or unqualified based on their past work experience is ridiculous.
I had an assistant basketball coach at a small Missouri high school that came with JUCO coaching experience, Divison II coaching experience, and small school Division I coaching experience. As a young coach I was nervous about having such an experienced assistant coach. I thought he was hired to work with me for a year and then take my job. It took all of five minutes before I realized how little he actually new about basketball. He was a likeable guy who knew the right people and was given some amazing opportunities. He had no business coaching. If you looked at his resume, by your standards, he should have been considered for several possible college coaching positions.
The question for any coach should be, can they coach the game of basketball and relate to players. If they can, I feel they can be successful at about any level.
