John Wooden never coached at Purdue and coached at a completely different time. He got the UCLA job nearly 70 years ago. Basketball wasn't a multi-billion dollar business when he was hired and the career path he took at the time was a normal path. In fact we hired a coach a couple years prior to Wooden being hired at UCLA and he was Northwest Missouri's coach(Wilbur Stalcup). But if you have to go back 70 years to rationalize a hire, that tells me all I need to know about how terrible of a hire this was and how truly unqualified he was.
