but that could be said about any type of license/registration, etc.

Laws are still broken on every topic, every day. I think it does help reduce crime rates by having hurdles and barriers. Those hurdles and barriers can be measured by the cost/difficulty factor versus the benefits. The general problem is that government always puts up barriers, but rarely takes them down....I would be in favor of all laws expiring then it has to be actively brought back.
