The environment was better but the sight lines were not good

A, B, and C sections at Hearnes were fine. But D section....well, the first time as a kid I came to realized my eyesight was not perfect and needed to get contact lenses was while sitting up in D section squinting to see the players miles below.

But that design flaw aside, yes, in terms of a college basketball environment it was built to create a great home court advantage with the fans right on top of you. And say what you will about the Quin era, but his push to move the student section down behind one of the baskets at Hearnes made the environment even more intimidating.
