I would say that unions can indeed be a force... for either positive or evil.
I think those with a lot of power & money like to do their best to control any groups, organizations, companies or whatever that can wield any power and especially if it poses a threat to themselves and their power or wealth. Of course the levers of power are a magnet to anyone who craves power and control, but those with a lot of money and power have an advantage in gaining control of those levers of power.
Unions have often seemed to become controlled by those who do not have an altruistic interest in doing what is best for the union members, and even less so in looking out for the interest(s) of society in general.
