I thought the people wanted an outsider where they were looking for someone to turn the political establishment upside down. One that we can trust will speak to our values.
However, he's a candidate who shifts to the winds of polls. If he sees his poll numbers crash, he'll moderate his rhetoric and try to appeal to Hispanics and blacks. Then when he starts to feel fallback from his core, he repositions himself and begins his tough guy routine.
First, Trump appears to soften on immigration here:

Then when receiving criticism from his base, he gives a fiery immigration speech that leads to key Latino advisors to abandon his campaign:

This is what happens when you choose a candidate with no moral compass. I'll conclude with this piece of scripture that describes Trump to a T, pun intended.
