buys the most single malt scotch whisky...
France.
That's right, not per capita, but by sheer volume. I've seen it in every single restaurant, cafe, brasserie, or wine bar that I've been to in Paris or Strasbourg. It could be because all Aberlour is aged in sherry casks, but who really knows. It could also be because they're owned by Pernod Ricard, so they have a great distribution system in France. They have a cask strength version named a'Bunadh that is outstanding, and is recognized as one of the best examples of a "sherry bomb".
If you enjoyed Aberlour, I would suggest the next step would be Macallan or Glenfarclas.
I'm wondering if we shop at the same place. My go to shop is Wine & Cheese on Forsyth, and they carry quite a bit of Signatory independent bottlings (IB).They just added Cadenhead IB, which owns one of my favorite distilleries, Springbank. Cadenhead has shops in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, and Cologne. I'Ve visited the one in Edinburgh, where they keep casks in the front room that contain vatted malt from any of the several areas like the highlands, Speyside, Islay, or the lowlands.
You're the second person who mentioned this weekend that peated whisky comes from the lowlands, so there must be some source for that. Actually, the lowland distilleries produce the most subtle whisky, which is the exact opposite of peated whisky, which is mostly distilled on the islands, where peat is used to heat the homes because there's not many trees left.
