I'll spell it out for you.
In those South American communities some people wished those young kids did not exist. (They were "unwanted" as you put it.) So they paid people to kill them.
In the U.S., as in many countries around the world now, when mothers wish their unborn children did not exist, they pay others to kill their tiny children for them.
