1) Happens all the time in business. You get a letter or notice that you're going to be audited, so you self-audit to prepare. You identify things that are likely to be picked up by the auditors and you either take steps to address them proactively, or you realize that they're going to have to be dealt with in the audit phase.
That's my guess as to how the things that ultimately became the basis of probation were introduced. It was not to provide cover for KA. It was because we were so bad at the time that they calculated (and rightfully so) that it would be better to self-report and you could use that period to fix other issues (APR, class balance, etc). Effectively, you have the probation running at the same time as the rebuild. We get credit for self-reporting (mitigation) and exemplary cooperation, instead of playing the audit risk game and seeing if we came through unscathed.
2) The fact that the original complaint (verbal inquiry) wasn't addressed in the final report just shows you how inept the NCAA is. As I pointed out yesterday, they can't even apply a universal definition of "mitigation" and instead, supplied a preventative standard when issuing punishment to Mizzou.
There was a finding of a Level II violation against an assistant. Who do you think that was? I'm sure it was Tim Fuller. That's why he got restricted and ultimately, that's why they parted ways with him - along with the fact that a lot of the guys he brought to the table were very sketchy like Zach Price.
