Stem from recruiting. Specifically getting to know a player well enough in that time where you know you can coach that player.
One of the reasons why the staff wasn't broken up about some if the departures is because they weren't able to get through to them. They could talk and teach players what to do, how to prepare, extra work needed.

He is still fresh enough back in D1 that he's still learning about who he can recruit, and who he can coach.
