Chemistry is not friends laughing their way through a game of paint ball.
Chemistry requires teammates clearly understanding and embracing their roles as individuals within the larger team context. When every player knows what it is he does best and then is willing to subjugate his own prominence to that of the team then you see individuals playing FOR one another. You see chemistry.
But young players do NOT inherently understand their individual role within the larger team context. That has to be clearly defined and then effectively communicated and then persuasively "sold" to them. They must be taught to see that their best chance to achieve their own individual goals is by sacrificing themselves to the team.
And THAT is ALL about coaching. A coach openly talking about a lack of chemistry is I think the most self-indicting commentary a coach can offer on himself.
When players do not understand their role, that is a failure in coaching.
When players do not embrace their role, that is a failure in coaching.
When players turn against eachother, that is a failure in coaching.
