by the Big 12.
You do not understand footprint. Footprint is about how large an area and how many new viewers you bring to a conference or, more importantly, network. Adding TCU did not expand the big 12 footprint by a single TV but it did add another mouth to feed.
I am not arguing the strength of TCU this is about the dollars and sense of the move. It was a panic move by the big 12 to stay at 10 teams and save their TV contracts. The smarter move would have been Louisville who has a very strong athletic department, adds new TV markets and cuts into Big 10 and SEC territory. They would have jumped at the offer back then.
Instead they added another Texas school. Big 12 leaders do not understand the landscape of sports today, they are stuck in a 90's view and it has hurt them.
