not in my opinion, slave masters as much as they were jailers.

In the 17th century, I think "inhumane" may be the best way to describe the treatment of both prisoners and slaves. Not a lot of compassion there.

Not unlike the treatment accorded slaves in ancient Rome, Egypt, and by American Indians.

But I think the daily interaction of American slaveholders and their chattel was more horrific than the capture, confinement and sale of Africans by Africans.
