I know you've all been on the edge of your seats awaiting my latest update. For background, search "Phrejd dividend" and enjoy.
As a brief refresher, 5 years ago I put together a small portfolio of high-yield stocks with the intention of managing it and learning a few things, namely how to maximize dividend yield while hopefully also enjoying some price appreciation. Ultimate objective is really just to be an informed investor as I move toward retirement, where my goal will be to fund my retirement exclusively through dividend income.
The result of my 5-year(ish) experiment is as follows:
Performance:
- Total value = $80,931.11
- Dividend yield = 10.22%
- Avg annual appreciation = 18.46% (vs S&P 13.6%)
While several of my original holdings from 2020 remained in the portfolio the full 5 years, several got cut along the way. I also added several along the way. And of course added weight to one or another, etc.
Holdings:
Abbvie ABBV
Brightspire Capital Inc BRSP
DHT Holdings Inc DHT
Energy Transfer ET
Global Net Lease GNL
Host Hotels & Resorts HST
Iron Mountain Inc IRM
Invesco IVZ
National Health Investors NHI
Annaly Capital Management NLY
Realty Income O
ONEOK, Inc OKE
Petroleo Brasileiro PBR/A
Pimco Dynamic Income PDI
Prudential Financial PRU
Phillips 66 Partners PSX
NEOS Nasdaq High Income QQQI
Schwab US Dividend Equity SCHD
Simon Property Group SPG
NEOS S&P 500 High Income SPYI
Starwood Property Trust STWD
Ventas, Inc VTR
Wells Fargo WFC
ZIM Integrated Shipping ZIM
What I learned:
1) Maintaining a reliable and consistent dividend yield portfolio of individual stocks is kind of a pain in the ass.
2) Volatility of individual stocks is still annoying.
3) While a handful of stocks were stars in both return and yield, I found that REITs, CEFs, and call option ETFs were just as successful. And collectively much less volatile.
Conclusion:
I learned what I wanted to learn and am in a much more informed position than I was 5 years ago. Overall the portfolio performed above expectations. I'm much more confident in my retirement plan and feel like I can start moving to that phase sooner than I initially intended.
As a result of this I sold all the individual stocks and REITS and consolidated them into a core set of broader ETFs. This is the strategy I will follow going forward.
