What's the strategic point of this? The old SR-71 was useful

in the time before satellites for reconnaissance. But today's satellites can take you a full resolution picture of an ant of any location in the world. We have plenty of plains that can fire missiles from extremely long distances too, so I'm not sure it's needed for that. I'm wondering what role does this actually fill besides wasting billions in taxpayers money?
