ones. The military had allegedly pressured the politicians to develop ones that would generate higher grade waste products that could be used for atomic weapons.
Newer versions can go on much cheaper and more available fuel and won't melt down, even if the plants lose power, such as happened to the Japanese plants in the wake of the tsunami. They would just shut down and stop producing.
At least one version can actually use the waste by-products from those earlier plants leaving far less hazardous waste as their own byproducts. That would help the disposal from older nuclear plants and could help take care of the stockpiles already accumulated.
To top it off, the newest generation nuclear plants can also be made modular and on a smaller scale, using the land area of current coal or gas fired generation plants.
