He was in training at Fort Benning as part of an infantry unit getting ready to get shipped over to France in the fall of '44. Radio operators were suffering high casualty rates so there was high demand for replacements. My dad scored off the charts on some aptitude test so they shipped him off to Amhurst, MA for radio training as his unit got shipped to the ETO . . . and into the Battle of the Bulge where they experienced high casualty rates. Haunted him his entire life.
