Volunteered for World War II in 1941.

Fairly early on they took some academic tests and one question was to describe the Pythagorean theorem. My relative knew that, he was the only one who did, and was offered a chance go to OCS, officer candidate school, and he took it.

He later found out that his original platoon was one of the first to hit the beaches at Omaha and 90% were slaughtered.
