We have not made a big splash in the portal this offseason, really yet to add any high profile or highly sought incoming transfer. I’m wondering if these examples are starting to catch up with us reputationaly.
2022 our biggest offseason acquisition by a wide margin was Isaiah Mosley. A top 15 scorer nationally as a junior and two time 1st team all conference that avged 31.6 MPG, he came to MU and totally disappeared. He started 3 games, avged single digits points in the games he did play in, and basically wasted his final year of college eligibility
2023 our biggest offseason acquisition was Connor Vanover. Coming off being named conference defensive player of the year and a 1st team all conference selection where he avged 12.7 ppg, 7.2 boards, and 3.2 blocks he came to MU and disappeared. He started 6 games and was totally ineffective, basically wasting his final year of eligibility.
2024 our biggest offseason acquisition was Tony Perkins. Coming off being named 2nd team all B1G and being honorable mention all conference the year prior , he avged 14 ppg and 4.6 assists. He came to MU and didn’t make a major impact, falling to 8 ppg and spending crunch time minutes on the bench. Another significant acquisition was Marques Warrick. After accumulating 2,246 points (most among active players) and 4 times being named to all conference teams, he came to MU and started zero games and only 13mpg, basically wasting his final year of eligibility.
Yes it’s true that transfers don’t always mesh or have struggles stepping into new roles or against higher level competition. But I’m not sure any program has consistently taken its biggest offseason acquisitions and gotten as little from them and put them on the bench as much as MU.
