Texas convinced Tech, OU and OState to seek a move to the PAC.
Texas presented the proposal to the PAC Presidents. Stanford’s President suggested the PAC delay accepting the proposed move because the PAC was entering a new TV contract and it should see how the new TV deal worked out before acting on the proposal. The PAC followed Stanford’s lead.
OU President David Boren held a press conference in which he stated OU would continue to. Pursue membership in other conferences than the Big 12.
Deaton concluded Texas, OU, et al were going to continue to look to exit the Big 12 and if there was an exodus, the survivors would Deb’s up with a lower paying TV deal and Mizzou would be negatively impacted. He directed Alden to pursue options.
Alden approached the Big Ten and was offered the Nebraska deal, that was immediate membership, it half revenue for five years.
Deaton then sent Alden to the SEC and Alden came back with full immediate membership. Mizzou jumped on the offer.
At the time, ESPN was introducing the SEC channel. It offered the new channel to existing ESPN customers for a small additional charge. It was anticipated that if Mizzou was admitted to the SEC, most ESPN customers in Missouri would automatically subscribe to ESPN SEC channel. Therefore admitting Mizzou resulted in additional revenue for ESPN and SEC schools.
