Those teams weren’t on year to year plans.

Duke had more 1st year players than any of the final 4 teams. They just happened to have a bunch of NBA ready freshmen. The others also had prep recruits in key roles, they just weren’t freshmen. They stayed and developed. None of the final 4 teams would have been there if they had been dumb enough to abandon the prep recruiting component of team building.
