These days, you recruit freshmen knowing that probably most of them are going into the portal after riding the pine for a year.

The reason you keep doing it is that you're not just recruiting players. You're recruiting coaches, handlers, etc., and building those relationships so when some former 4-star recruit hits the portal, you know their AAU coach and hopefully have an in with them.

It used to be you recruited players for your roster. You still do that, but mostly, you're recruiting their coaches, parents, handlers, etc. so you can leverage those relationships when the kid inevitably transfers.
