"a career Justice Department attorney", disagreed with the overall thrust of his client's goals and was clearly undermining those goals. Attorneys do not typically intentionally undermine their clients' cases. Many will defend clients even if they know that they are guilty of a crime or are doing something that they disagree with. In fact, it is their ethical duty to do so. They could decline to take that case, but they don't deliberately sabotage their client's case.
