I think it is dumb as well. But having watched the Timberwolves play, it does draw crowds and all to the game and all. It also expands the playoff race as well, just like when MLB added the extra wild card. The goal is to drive more ticket sales in the last month of the season, and the more teams that are "in it" the more people will go and follow.

This year, the West conference was also in that there were 6 teams separated by 2 games.
