Within the movie there was a Jude Law character that used social media as a platform to push conspiracy theories about that pandemic for financial gain.

We saw this happen with COVID. People who are skeptical of government, but of limited intelligence latched on to the conspiracy theories to explain the events going on around them. Those same people are often attached to MAGA and putting their faith in one dear leader because he feeds on their distrust of government, and they are oblivious to his attempts to consolidate power in the executive.
