It was used to help bring about the Federal Reserve, for instance. Giving a monopolistic death grip control over a nation's money is obviously putting a totalitarian tool in the hands of some very powerful people, and not a good thing for a society.
It has also been a tool for pressuring institutions and the scientists and researchers that they employ to come up with the results that those holding the purse strings want them to come up with, no?
